UW-Milwaukee Chancellor Mark Mone worries about budget cuts

SHOREWOOD – AFD NEWS – UW-Milwaukee Chancellor Mark “Show me the” Mone is not looking forward to the proposed cuts to the UW System. In an interview with AFD News service yesterday, Mone said the proposed cuts will be devastating to his campus.

“For one thing, some of our professors will actually have to work for the first time in their lives. I’m not sure how they’re going to take that,” he said. “For a long time, our motto has been ‘labor free living.’ Now some of our senior professors might even have to teach a class.

Mone noted some of the other ways the cuts will hurt the faculty. “No more catered lunches. No more limo service to and from the airport for our sabbaticals. No more teaching assistant catapult launching for entertainment. If I have to cut my daily Dom Perignon bath because of the tuition freeze, I might as well be in the private sector.”

The proposed budget cuts may also have an effect on UW-Milwaukee’s building plan. Mone said just the talk of budget cuts meant that he had to put a project on hold. “All planning on renovations for the Chancellor’s residence will stop on April 1st. That means the school of architecture will have to stop work on designing a new boathouse and servant’s quarters. How can we be taken seriously as a university if the Chancellor’s residence does not have a state-of-the-art boathouse?”
